Moss-filtered Pool

Disinfectants (e.g. chlorine) are used to maintain good quality of the water in the swimming pools. The disadvantages possed by the use of chemicals are numerous and they include:

1. Pool water treatment system is required to eradicate biofilm. Biofilm is a substance that forms when bacteria sticks to the surfaces (walls, floors, of equipment, of stairs) of the pool forming a biofilm colony. When chlorine is used, it only impacts the edges of the biofilm; it does not properly remove the biofilm leading to the formation of disinfectant by-products

2. Chemical treatment is not environmentally friendly and it costs organizations fortunes.

3. The disinfectant by-products produced while using chlorine causes pool swimmers' skins to be dry, turns swimmers hair colors to green, makes swimming suits to fade in color and turns the color of surfaces of the pool and the equipment to white.

4. As a result of changing hair colour, fading suit pants and dry skins, most swimmers no longer want to use chlorine/chemically cleaned pools thus leading to decrease in customer patronage and hence lower and lower revenue.

5. As a result of white colouring of the surfaces in the pool, there are increased cleaning (i.e. power backwashing) leading to lots of water wastage, increased energy needs for cleaning and decrease in the bottom line.

Consequent on the above reasons, alternatives to the use of chemicals for pool cleaning are been sougt by pool owners. Natural forms of cleaning agents are being researched. The Sphagnum moss is one of the naturally options being used these days to filter and clean the swimming pool water. Sphagnum moss are put into strainer bags and used as a water conditioner and treatment agent in the swimming pool water treatment system to eradicate biofilm. Biofilm forms everywhere in the pool, including the surfaces, the walls, the stairs and son on. When chlorine is used, it only touches the edges of the biofilm, whereas the moss cleans all the biofilm.

Less chemicals and Cost Savings:

One of the major benefits of using a moss-filtered pool is that it reduces the amount of disinfectants (such as chlorine or fluorine) used to clean the pool thus minimizing the cost of chemical usage. When a pool operator switched from chemical cleaning of their swimming pool to moss-filtered treatment, they reported  about $36,000 savings in the cost of chemical purchase within the first year of switching.

Less Cleaning and Cost Savings:

The pool maintenance cost  of the operator owner reported above aso reduced by $40,000 because of the switch to the moss-filtered treatment as a result of the fact that less cleaning of the pool is required and fewer lifeguards are used. There is also cost savings because of less or no need for backwashing which uses a lot of water to clean the pool.

Cleaner Air, cleaner water, healthier staff and Increased Patronage and Increased Revenue

The use of the sphagnum moss is also beneficial because it provides clean air and water for both workers and swimmers within and outside the pool. It makes the worker’s life easier as it reduces the cleaning of the pool. It also reduces dry skin, green hair, white colouring of the walls, stairs, equipment surfaces; and worn out swimsuits of the swimmers. It provides healthier water to swim in. Consequently, more and more customers are attracted to use the pool, thus resulting in the substantial increase of the revenue from the pool. The operator mentioned above reported about $100,000 increment in revenue when they switched to the moss-filtered system.

In conclusion, moss-filtered pools are beneficial because (i) they are environmentally friendly due to lesser usage of chemicals, (ii) they reduce cost of operating the pools because less chemicals are bought, no backwashing is required and less personnel or staff are required to run the pool and (iii) they attract more customers/swimmers and lead to higher revenue as the swimmers no longer experience dry skin, green hair or fading swimsuits.
